Batgirl, a new graduate and a coach with a golf habit

The best-known names in Bakersfield are odd and likeable. One cosplayer managed Batgirl, Maid Marian and a Witcher sorceress in a single late summer. There is a dancer who reads and has just finished at Cal State Bakersfield. Heading for the golf course between games is a football coach, and a newly qualified nurse has a glamorous streak. The charm is that they never read like a press release.

Bakersfield has 77 creators listed, including them. The town comes through in small, homely ways: a campus, a country club fairway, and a living room where Halloween is planned weeks ahead.

Why Bakersfield's favourites roll video and wear ink

Video labels cover 43% of popular pages, a higher share than the 35% on the full list. Tattoos and working solo lean the same way by smaller margins. Together they suggest a town that likes its creators inked, independent and on camera. Nothing much hangs on it: black, blonde and brunette are almost level with the usual pattern. Our read is that in Bakersfield, personality does the heavy lifting. Labels just set the table.

The characters behind Bakersfield's busiest cards

#1Angie Griffin: Cosplayer Who Puts Halloween to a Vote

Cosplay drives everything Angie Griffin does. In a few weeks she has been Triss from The Witcher to mark the remaster, a cheeky Maid Marian borrowed from Mel Brooks's Robin Hood: Men in Tights, and Batgirl in time for Batman Day, with a bunny nod for National Bunny Day. She is glamorous, flirty and always in on the joke. Her fans call themselves the Angie Army, and they get a real say. She lets them vote on the theme of her next Halloween video, and when they once picked a colour, she ran with it for a full week. She calls Bakersfield home and charges nothing.

#2missionarychristy: Bookish Dancer With a Fresh Diploma

Books and the dance floor are the two great loves of missionarychristy, and both suit a woman who spent the past few years at Cal State Bakersfield before graduating in May. Halloween weekend is one she never misses, and she has wandered the Santa Cruz boardwalk and Northern California's hills, being sweet as well as flirty. She makes every video and custom request herself, promising something new each day so that regulars keep checking in.

#3Ayevah: Chamorro Nurse With a Sultry Side

Nursing school meant years of short nights and hard exams, and Ayevah came out of it a registered nurse with the hospital job she always wanted. She studied in Texas and is fiercely proud of being Chamorro, one of very few Pacific Islander nurses in the country. The people around her cheer every milestone. Off duty she is all glamour, with a sultry, confident edge. Her page pairs pictures and videos with chat, and new subscribers get a full video when they join.

#4Dont_Kill_Kenny: Sideline Coach Who Sneaks Off for Golf

Football fills the season for Dont_Kill_Kenny, a Bakersfield coach with a kinesiology degree who calls each year fun and challenging in equal parts. Away from the sideline there is golf, including a scramble at Sundale Country Club that was a blast, a Star Wars costume when Halloween comes round, and a long-standing soft spot for San Francisco. The mood is grateful and easygoing. The page is free, and the plan is simple: have a good time and make friends along the way.
