Where the Emscher meets the Ruhr, and the ink comes standard

Dortmund runs the eastern Ruhr. The district's administration, its shopping and much of its culture are here, on the Emscher and the Ruhr, inside one of the wealthiest metropolitan regions in the European Union. Only Cologne and Düsseldorf are bigger in North Rhine-Westphalia, and among the cities of the Low German dialect area only Hamburg outgrows it. People here are practical and say what they think, which suits the creators the city produces.

People's most viewed choices among our 35 creators share a good deal of that working-town candour. Among them are a dog groomer who became a piercer, a bodybuilder with a prankster's timing, a podcast crew who dissect online feuds and a pop singer with a theory about Nutella. Among them, tattoos are common, talking back is common, and taking themselves too seriously is rare.

Ten we would follow from a Re:Zero set to a Karlsruhe fair floor

#1Mila Visions: Re:Zero Twin Who Never Slices Her Fruit

Mila Visions happily embraced character roleplay as something new. This summer she shot a Re:Zero twin set in Dortmund and promised more duos to come. She has Romanian, Dutch and German roots and lives in NRW. Fruit cutting has gone, but the nostalgic duck pose remains, and nothing makes her laugh louder than her own small disasters. Nothing shared on the wellness floor: her treat is a hotel spa in Cologne entirely to herself. Her idea of the future is a camper and an open road. Replies accompany full-length subscription videos without hidden extras from this sunny, sultry and gloriously unbothered creator.

#2Evee_Avery: Chaos Leopard Who Swapped Clippers for a Needle

By day Evee_Avery works as an apprentice piercer, a trade she plainly adores, after years of grooming dogs. After hours she is devoted to pole dance. Affection informs her chaos leopard self-description; principle drives her refusal of fur, while Nova the dog and Loki the black cat share her home. Photographers line up for her at women's art days around Germany, she slips off to Berlin whenever she can, and she still takes shoots on request. Videos and warm chat fill her complimentary page, with glamour delivered through a wink. She plays her change from well-behaved groomer to seductress as a running joke.

#3Strumpfhosenfee: Sunday Lie-In With an Office Alibi

Her office weeks are no secret with Strumpfhosenfee. She sends snapshots from her desk, greets the weekend like a prize and treats Sunday as a day for refusing to leave bed. She asks everyone what they have planned for Saturday and sends warm wishes on every public holiday. That cosy, flirty homeliness is the whole spell. For a private video call with her, anyone can write first.

#4Evelin: Free Door With Wishes Taken

Free to open, Evelin welcomes newcomers with a confident tease and a promise of fun together. Inside are photos and exclusive videos, and she makes individual wishes to order, one subscriber at a time.

#5Sophia Blackfoxx: Ruhrpott Biter Nobody Has Figured Out

From Dortmund comes Sophia Blackfoxx, Ruhrpott through and through. She has the region's cheeky attitude, loves a relaxed and funny conversation, and warns that she bites now and then. Music fills her free hours, the heavier the better, and she keeps art and tattoo design going on the side. Her favourite trick is the knowing look: everyone thinks they have worked her out, and nobody has. She chats readily, broadcasts live and has videos on her page. She aims to join the SuicideGirls roster.

#6Aenn Alien: Eclipse Watcher Who Always Lifts Heavy

To Aenn Alien, gym rat is no idle description: she treats heavy lifting almost as a creed. Among her own descriptions are shiny alien and hungry demon. Dortmund’s Flair und Liebe market knows her well, while alternative photographers seek her out from a Castrop-Rauxel workshop to Karlsruhe’s Obscene fair. This summer she watched the solar eclipse beside a photographer friend, and the pictures from that evening are something special. Being gothic, playful and very good company accompanies her complimentary page's chat and videos, plus requested bespoke photos and videos.

#7Mommy Mel 🔥: Bench-Press Riddle With a Prankster's Grin

Single-handedly curling a grown man is within her power, jokes bodybuilder Mommy Mel 🔥, whose priority is strength. She dares subscribers to guess her bench press record, and a correct guess earns a gift. Away from the bar she is a comic at heart, forever turning gym life, home DIY tests and small pranks into sketches. Bossy, funny and proudly strong, she keeps her page strictly safe for work and wants to be written to.

#8sophiecarter: Architecture Student Who Sets the Terms

Writing shapes everything sophiecarter does. A book lover writing fantasy fiction, she studies architecture and navigates English and German with ease. Her page is about money domination near Dortmund, a role in which she alone sets the terms.

#9Sascha von LautFunk: Workshop of Deliberate Nonsense

Less a single performer than a small creative workshop, Sascha von LautFunk gathers art, nerd culture, writing and audio under one proudly absurd banner, Audiovisual Stumpfsinn, which loosely means nonsense with little or no practical use. With straight faces, the crew pick apart online feuds and the psychology of hate-watching, and a synth-mad spin-off argues over drum machines and Linux recording setups. Supporters on the free page hear the podcasts first and get rough cuts and the thinking behind them before anyone else. Best for a listener who likes late nights loud and argumentative.

#10Christopher van Holt: Pop Showman With a Nutella Theory

Half British and half German, Christopher van Holt is a pop musician whose catalogue includes a song called The Joker and a cover of Billy Idol's Rebel Yell. Off stage he plays the household comedian. He tests a gold face mask bought from a bargain site, reasons that plant-based Nutella technically counts as salad, and mishears film lines on purpose because the wrong version is funnier. Camp, quick and happily self-mocking, he has had a quiet year on the album front, but the wit has not dimmed.

Ink and a ready chat outrun the Dortmund average

The city's favourites wear their choices openly and answer when spoken to. Popularity brings ink to 75% rather than Dortmund's 46%, while the chat label claims almost twice its usual share. Popularity roughly doubles the prevalence of the piercing label and increases the girl next door label's share too. We think Dortmund favours character over polish. People here want someone with visible ink and a sharp tongue who writes back, and they care less for a glossy catalogue run from a distance. Video still matters, but it comes as standard. Someone who sounds local has the real advantage.
